Chapter Fifteen: Nina
The sun is rising by the time I settle underneath the covers of a bed in one of the many guest rooms available at Blackwood Manor.
"You have so many bedrooms in this house. What do you need all this space for if you're the only one living here?" I had asked him when he led me all the way up to the third floor.
"I utilize the guest rooms often, but for the most part, I prefer privacy." I wanted to ask why, but the heady exhaustion that threatened to take me down like a rogue wave kept me quiet. Alec informs me that he will take care of excusing me from work for the day and then leaves me in silence.
Despite the morning sunlight that dawns on Manhattan, the room is dark. Thick curtains block out the light and when I reach out to touch them, I realize they're made of soft velvet.
Alone in an ancient vampire's lair, I stare up at the ceiling and try to regain a semblance of sanity. My head is spinning, partly because of Alec's venom and Dmitri's attack but also because I am desperately trying to make sense of the information that has been thrust upon me in the past few hours.
It's impossible but trueâvampires are real. And some vampires, the ones who were born human and turned later, are more volatile and unpredictable. They deliver painful bites.
But vampires like Alec have bites that make me feel hornier than I ever thought possible. The sensation and its aftereffects were so overwhelming that I was tempted to beg Alec to let me leave if only to stay far away from him while I felt like this.
Unfortunately, the locks on my building and my individual apartment are broken thanks to both Dmitri and Alec, so I have no choice but to accept this bed in Alec's mansion for the night.
Or rather, for the day.
I close my eyes, inhaling through my nose and exhaling through my mouth in the slow, measured way that I do whenever my anxiety spikes.
It doesn't help.
Every inch of skin on my body is tingling as if electrified. Even the satin sheets caressing my bare skin send me into a fit of desire.
It's too hot. In the silent darkness, I rise from the bed and make sure that the door is securely shut. Pressing my ear to the wood, I listen for any evidence that Alec is lurking in the hallway outside, but there is nothing. Then again, I'm sure that I wouldn't be able to locate Alec unless he wanted to be found.
Satisfied that I'm at least somewhat alone, I strip off my shirt and trousers. I continue my breathing exercises as I fold my clothes and place them neatly atop an embroidered ottoman.
Once again, I curse Alec for choosing the red lace lingerie, but I do feel a little better without those layers clinging to me.
Climbing back into bed, I resume glaring at the ceiling. I have to clench my hands into fists to keep them from roaming between my legs.
